MRD Limited Edition Custom Frame Fork & Bars Kit
Background & Lineage
This is a very limited run of 20 custom, handmade frame and fork kits, created as a modern interpretation of the MRD Pro Series frame and fork kit last produced in 1985. The original MRD Pro Series holds a significant place in UK and European BMX history, including the bike ridden by Tim March to victory at the 1984 UKBMX National Championships and the Superclass European Championships.
This limited edition project revisits that lineage while updating it for modern riding and construction standards.
Frame Construction & Materials
Each frame and fork set is brazed by Brian Curtis of Frome, known as the “Torch Wizard”, using carefully selected materials chosen for performance and durability. The main triangle and fork legs are constructed from Reynolds 853 tubing, while aircraft-grade T45 steel is used for the looped rear end. This combination delivers a responsive, resilient steel chassis suited to hard riding while retaining the feel that made classic MRD frames distinctive.
Modern Design & Updates
While rooted in a classic MRD race frame, this kit incorporates modern technical updates to bring it fully up to date as a premium steel race, trails, and pumptrack bike. The design includes an integrated headset, a T47 bottom bracket, 3-D machined 10mm dropouts, a 31.6mm seat tube, and braze-on seat clamp and brake bosses. These updates ensure compatibility with contemporary components while preserving the character of the original design.
Finishing & Quality Control
Each frame and fork set goes through a thorough finishing process, including reaming and re-tapping of the seat tube and bottom bracket. Every frame is checked for alignment to ensure consistency, strength, and ride quality. This attention to detail reflects the small-batch, handmade nature of the project rather than mass production.
Intended Use
This bike is designed as a premium steel race, trails, and pumptrack build for riders who want a highly individual machine that can be ridden hard. It is built for those who value craftsmanship, performance, and heritage equally — a modern steel bike with genuine MRD DNA rather than a retro replica.
Availability
This was a strictly limited production of 20 frame and fork kits. Each one is individually made, and no further runs are planned.
